Group Family Camp July 2013

Camping

On Friday evening many beavers, cubs and scouts arrived with their families to set up their tents or caravans for the weekend and were also joined by a few explorers.

After everyone had settled in, and it was dark, it was time for a wide game of capture the flag which everyone seemed to enjoy.

Saturday morning, after flag break, saw the treasure/scavenger hunt take place where teams had to collect several items from around the camp site including a leaf shaped like a car and an insect named Bob! Later on some fantastic art work was produced in the craft tent and after lunch anyone who wanted, parents included, were able to have a go at archery and air rifle shooting.

When the water slide came out later there were long queues to have a go and it looked really good fun.

Unfortunately, the forecasted rain eventually caught up with us, although it was later than originally forecast, and the camp fire was very wet and soggy with several people leaving early before they were completely soaked or choosing not to venture out of their tents in the first place. And the usually popular Jip Strips had to be cancelled.

However, Sunday arrived bright and dry and after breakfast and flag break it was off to stack some crates and see how high you could climb before the whole lot toppled over.

After lunch it’s a knock out and tug of war rounded off the weekend and there was just time to hand out prizes before lowering the flag and heading home.

Beavers end of term BBQ

BBQ

The beavers finished a busy term with the traditional games night and B-B-Q.

Tic-Tac arranged use of a spare field at a local farm and the beavers enjoyed cricket, tennis, skittles and generally had a good run about. They then sat down to a feast of burgers and hot dogs before running off to play again before the big mean parents came and took them away.

Beavers resumes on the 10th of September with 13 cubs invested and around 6 new ones ready to join in the fun.

Happy holidays from Tic-Tac, Rusty and Keeo.

Orwell District Cub Camp – July 12th-14th

On July 12th several of our cubs arrived at District Cub Camp at 6pm ready for flag break 6-45pm and a fun weekend ahead.

After flag break we had a sport competition followed by a hot dog supper, hot chocolate and then bed.

On Saturday morning we were all up early, had breakfast, flag break and then went into groups to work on a badge.

At lunch it was back to our bases and then some free time which was spent mostly playing in the woods and on the grass area at the back of our camp. Later the tug of war was hard and we didn’t win but we tried our best.

Some helpful parents came onto site and cooked us some nice food followed by camp fire then back to our tents to sleep.

After breakfast and flag break on Sunday morning we went into small groups to prepare the variety show for the afternoon.

The sun shone all weekend which made the leaders very happy as all tents were taken down dry.

At the end of Sunday all the cubs got their badges and then it was time to go home. A good time was had by all.

Kirton Open Gardens – June 23rd

1st Kirton Scout Group would like to thank Kirton Gardeners’ Club for opening their gardens on Sunday 23rd June to raise funds for the new Scout hut.

We hope everyone enjoyed the day and the feedback received by our project manager, Keith, has been of a fantastic event. We know how much hard work was put into presenting your gardens for our fellow villagers, and the wider audience, of which was around 250 people in total

As you know the day was to raise funds for the new Scout hut. So I am very pleased to tell you that with your helped we achieved the very grand total of £1,365.00. So again on behalf of the 1st Kirton Scout Group please accept our gratitude and a big,

Orwell District Scout Camp – June 14th-16th

tentScouts attended Orwell District Scout Camp this weekend. The camp is a competition which involves gaining points for activity participation, cooking and campsite .

Activities on Saturday included canoeing, abseiling, climbing, archery, shooting and many more. In the evening there was It’s a Knock Out involving many bouncy castles and the traditional go kart races using home made go karts.

On Sunday activities were based more on Scouting skills including tent pitching, firelighting, cooking and pioneering. We didn’t win but our 4 young Scouts had a great time and did very well against some much bigger and older troops.

Scout Community week

3rd – 9th June was national Scout Community week.scout community week

The idea is that Scouts complete a community project and raise money for their own group and the national fund to help disadvantaged children get involved with Scouting.

1st Kirton Scout Group agreed to paint the Falkenham Church fence as their project.

Scouts started this work on 5th June and  the Cubs and Explorers will join in over the next few weeks, between us we aim to have the work finished during the summer

A Good Turn Out for the Car Boot Sale and Fun Day

Car Boot Sale and Fun Day

On Sunday 2nd June we held our annual car boot sale at Kirton Recreation Ground and this year, to celebrate our 40th birthday, we decided to make it even bigger and more fun.

It was an early start for all the helpers, setting up the field for the sellers, organising the parking area for buyers and starting up the BBQ for the bacon, sausage or egg rolls.

The tasty bacon rolls were definitely very popular and we had to send out for more bacon supplies part way through the morning as we ran out.

Fortunately the weather was much better than it has been recently which seemed to draw more people out and the ice cream van was doing a roaring trade too.

In addition to the car boot stalls there was fun for the children with a bouncy castle, coconut shy, panning for gold and henna tattoos to keep them amused. We were also selling raffle tickets for our grand draw which takes place in October.

We hope everyone had a good day and a big thank you to all the visitors and especially everyone who helped. See you again next year.

Beavers visit Bewilderwood

PICT0059xOn Saturday May 18th 7 of our Beavers set off bright and early for an exciting day of adventure in Norfolk.

They were off to Bewilderwood for a tiring day of climbing, sliding, swinging and Boggle hunting with Beavers from other groups in the Orwell District.

The Beavers all had a fantastic time but we don’t know who was the most tired at the end of the day. Was it the Beavers or the leaders?

Have a look at our Gallery to see some photos from the day.
