Orwell District Scout Camp – June 14th-16th

tentScouts attended Orwell District Scout Camp this weekend. The camp is a competition which involves gaining points for activity participation, cooking and campsite .

Activities on Saturday included canoeing, abseiling, climbing, archery, shooting and many more. In the evening there was It’s a Knock Out involving many bouncy castles and the traditional go kart races using home made go karts.

On Sunday activities were based more on Scouting skills including tent pitching, firelighting, cooking and pioneering. We didn’t win but our 4 young Scouts had a great time and did very well against some much bigger and older troops.

Scout Community week

3rd – 9th June was national Scout Community week.scout community week

The idea is that Scouts complete a community project and raise money for their own group and the national fund to help disadvantaged children get involved with Scouting.

1st Kirton Scout Group agreed to paint the Falkenham Church fence as their project.

Scouts started this work on 5th June and  the Cubs and Explorers will join in over the next few weeks, between us we aim to have the work finished during the summer

A Good Turn Out for the Car Boot Sale and Fun Day

Car Boot Sale and Fun Day

On Sunday 2nd June we held our annual car boot sale at Kirton Recreation Ground and this year, to celebrate our 40th birthday, we decided to make it even bigger and more fun.

It was an early start for all the helpers, setting up the field for the sellers, organising the parking area for buyers and starting up the BBQ for the bacon, sausage or egg rolls.

The tasty bacon rolls were definitely very popular and we had to send out for more bacon supplies part way through the morning as we ran out.

Fortunately the weather was much better than it has been recently which seemed to draw more people out and the ice cream van was doing a roaring trade too.

In addition to the car boot stalls there was fun for the children with a bouncy castle, coconut shy, panning for gold and henna tattoos to keep them amused. We were also selling raffle tickets for our grand draw which takes place in October.

We hope everyone had a good day and a big thank you to all the visitors and especially everyone who helped. See you again next year.

Beavers visit Bewilderwood

PICT0059xOn Saturday May 18th 7 of our Beavers set off bright and early for an exciting day of adventure in Norfolk.

They were off to Bewilderwood for a tiring day of climbing, sliding, swinging and Boggle hunting with Beavers from other groups in the Orwell District.

The Beavers all had a fantastic time but we don’t know who was the most tired at the end of the day. Was it the Beavers or the leaders?

Have a look at our Gallery to see some photos from the day.

St Georges Day

1st Kirton Scout Group attended the St Georges day parade along the Promenade at Felixstowe along with other groups from the Orwell District. It was a great turnout by all the groups and was lovely to see all the flags flying.

Fortunately it was a lovely, dry, sunny day as the groups were unable to have the usual service in the Spa Pavillion this year, but a trailer was set up outside the Spa and a shorter service was held there.
