On Saturday 20th September 1st Kirton joined with other Orwell District Scouts at Trimley Marches for the annual beach clean. It was great day, big turnout, and lots of rubbish was collected. Well done to all the beavers, cubs, scouts, explorers network and Leaders who helped turn this into a big community event.
It’s almost time for our October Jumble Sale. Scouts will be collecting jumble in the village on the evening of Wednesday 8th October and the Jumble Sale takes place on Saturday 11th. Doors open at 2pm.
If any parents can come along to help, either collecting on Wednesday, setting up Saturday morning or at the jumble in the afternoon it would be much appreciated. The more help the better.
During our Group Family Camp two of our Beavers, Harriet and William, were presented with the Chief Scout Bronze award which is the highest award available in the Beaver Scout Section.
It is gained by completing all six Challenge Badges.
Well done, both of you.
Family Camp was, once again, held at Hallowtree toward the end of July and several families joined their Beavers, Cubs and Scouts for an enjoyable weekend.
After the tents has been set up and the sun had set, the youngsters let off steam with a game of capture the flag. I have no idea which team won but they were all running around having a great time.
On Saturday there was a change to the usual program. Following the treasure hunt most families made their way to Cattawade where they could have a go at canoeing or kayaking. Several games were played on the water including Head, Shoulders, Knees and Jump, and joining the kayaks into a line and taking turns to walk across the back or front! It looked like everyone enjoyed themselves although there were a few people who did end up in the river!
Families had also been tasked with building a ballista from broom handles, string and elastic during the weekend and this was put to the test on Sunday. Each team had to fire their bean bag as far as they could then move the ballista along and fire again until they reached the other side of the field. This was much harder for the scouts who had to build theirs from considerably larger and heavier poles but still had to transport the ballista to the other side of the field.
Also on Sunday a game of It’s a Knockout was held which involved soggy sponges, holey buckets and a large amount of water. The weather was very hot so the water did help to cool everyone down.
Unfortunately the planned custard pie fight had to be cancelled at the last minute as the heavens opened and the grass was just too slippery.
Recently Cubs had a change from their usual meeting at the hut and, instead, had an evening at Waldringfield.
They all had fun on the beach making dams and castles and even an amazing replica of the World Scout Emblem made from stones and shells.

The Theme for the District Cub Camp this year was World War 1.
The weather was a bit on the wet side but the 11 cubs that attended from 1st Kirton still had lots of fun.
Our bases were stretchers, first aid, rockets, messages, wreaths, shooting, parachute, fall in, hunt and seed/wall.
There was also tug of war, football and of course a sing-song around the campfire.
Friday evening 13th June saw 7 Scouts, 2 of whom were very new, pitching their tents for the annual Orwell District Scout Camp at Hallowtree, a weekend long competition including camping skills and activities all earning points.
On Sunday the activities were more skills based and included fire lighting, knife and axe, tent pitching and stilt walking, there was also the site inspection. After lunch all 130 Scouts and their leaders gathered to lower the flag and find out who had won what; we were delighted to find that 1st Kirton had won the orienteering and were presented with a trophy and three new compasses, the lads and lasses also came 2nd overall a brilliant result.
Well done to them all, then it was time for the very tired Scouts and even more tired leaders to go home – all done for another year.
The weather was kind, yet again, for the St Georges day parade along the Promenade at Felixstowe along with other groups from the Orwell District.
With a slightly different format this year, the groups met at the Spa and marched along to the Leisure Centre where they joined in with hymns, prayers and awards.
Afterwards, 1st Kirton gathered on the beach for their usual St Georges Day photo before several left to get ice-cream. We are playing ‘Spot the Leader’ with this photo. Believe it or not, Alex can just be spotted in there somewhere if you look very carefully.
